Creating a system of trails to enhance our community.

The Trail System

Sand Lake Project Area Trails: Master Plan, Buzzard Butte Trail Network

Master Plan

Has been done thanks to Travel Oregon’s grant money and Bros and Hoes work.  Over 30 miles of trail has been scouted, flagged and GPS’ed to create a comprehensive layout of the trail system.

Buzzard Butte Trail Network

The Buzzard Butte Trail Network lies east of Sand Lake, between Capes Kiwanda and Lookout in the USDA Siuslaw National Forest, Hebo District. Currently The BBT system will be approximately 35 miles of contemporary single track, primarily on the west side of the slope offering incredible views of the Pacific, as well as providing year round ideal riding conditions.  This section will include single track and decommissioned road to trail conversions (troads) surrounding the Siuslaw Forest Road 1004.

The overall project budget for BBTN is nearly $2,000,000.  The project includes about 35 miles of trail to meet all levels of mountain bike experience.  A skills park is included in the plan that will give mountain bikers the opportunity to improve their skills, making them more prepared for the trails they are about to ride.

Thanks to Travel Oregon, Oregon State Parks and Tillamook County grant programs, we have been selected to receive $310,000 in grant funds for trail building once we have approval to build trails. The Travel Oregon grant helped us to create the Master Plan where we flagged and created the map for the trail system. The TLT and RTP grants are reimbursement grants so we have to raise money to match the grant in order to receive it. We still have a ways to go - Please support TORTA any way you can. NVSD Skills Park and Pump Track

Nestucca Valley Elementary School K-8 is a state of the art new school here in South Tillamook County.  They have put a lot of effort and money into their sports fields behind the school including a regulation soccer field, collegiate sized and OSAA approved baseball fields and softball fields with a brand new dugout and a community playground with all the bells and whistles.

Adding to their amazing outdoors facilities, NVSD is working with TORTA and Velo Solutions to create an all levels bike skills park and pump track behind the baseball fields.  NVSD has also connected with All Kids Bike Program, a nationwide after school bike program designed to teach 3-5 year olds how to bike using non pedal bikes.  The school was awarded 40 non pedal bikes rot begin the program and has received donations and sponsorships to support the program from the community.  The members, fans and supporters of TORTA raised over $10k at our last fundraising event Bike Town and mountain biking documentary by Free Hub.  TORTA then donated that $10,000 to support the bike park development at NVSD.  With the bike facilities being developed at the school there will finally be a safe place for kids to ride their bikes here in South Tillamook County!
